Age can be interpreted in different ways depending on the country, culture, or traditional method being followed. Our age calculator uses the standard age calculation method commonly followed in most Western countries, where a person's age increases by one year on their birthday.
For example, if someone has completed 3 years and 11 months of life, their current age is 3 years. Once their next birthday arrives one month later, their age becomes 4 years.
Not every culture calculates age in exactly the same way. In some traditions, a person's age may be described by counting the current year of life rather than only the number of completed years.
For instance, a person who has completed 20 years may also be described as being in their 21st year of life.
Traditional Chinese age calculation is another example. Under one traditional system, a baby is considered to be 1 year old at birth, and the age increases at the beginning of the Traditional Chinese New Year rather than on the individual's birthday. Therefore, a baby born shortly before the Chinese New Year could become 2 years old according to this traditional system only a few days after birth.
Calculating the exact number of months and days between two dates can sometimes produce different results, particularly when the dates fall near the end of a month.
For example, from February 20 to March 20, the difference is clearly one month. However, consider the period from February 28, 2022 to March 31, 2022.
Both approaches can be considered valid because calendar months do not all contain the same number of days.
Similar differences may occur with dates such as April 30 to May 31 or May 30 to June 30.
For consistency, our age calculator follows the first approach when determining the number of completed months and remaining days. This means the calculation is based on matching the day of the month first, and then counting any remaining days separately.
Using the dates you enter, the calculator determines the person's age based on the standard birthday-based age system. It can calculate the completed years, months, and days between the birth date and the selected date while taking differences in month lengths into account.
The result represents the person's completed age, rather than counting the current year of life as an additional year.
